Cybercrime's Easiest Prey are Small Businesses

Small Businesses continue to be the most victimized of all companies as shown in a recent data breach investigation report from Verizon.  In 2012, almost half of the incidents recorded had companies with fewer than 1,000 employees.

A separate report from Symantec, showed that small businesses with less than 250 members represented 31% of all attacks in 2012, which is up from 18% the prior year.

Cybercriminals use smaller businesses as a "stepping stone" to larger companies and more patient ones are targeting small companies in growth industries like health care or manufacturing. They hope that their targets would get acquired by a larger corporation and when the company merges or is acquired, they striked to gain access and breach the system of the parent company.

The most important lessons in protecting your small business are the most basic: Use strong passwords, update antivirus software, and don't expose your essential business services to the Internet.
